Harrison Student Is National Merit Scholar
She joins six other Polk students who were named in May. They are Lake Wales resident Ethan P. Emery, Cameron A. Johnson of Lake Wales, Mae A. Valenti of Lakeland, all of the International Baccalaureate program at Bartow High School, Davenport resident Stephany L. Demmler, a homeschool student, Lakeland resident Justin Middleton of Lakeland Christian School, and Lakeland resident Joshua Hazelton, a homeschool student.
Hagerty's National Merit Scholarship is funded by the University of Florida, which she will attend this fall. She plans to study neuroscience, according to information provided by the School District.

Altogether, there were 118 private and 80 public colleges and universities in 45 states and the District of Columbia that sponsored about 4,800 awards. Overall, 8,300 students received awards totaling $35 million from colleges/universities, corporations and the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
The students were selected from more than 1.5 million juniors from 22,000 high schools who took the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and made it to the finalist round.
