Back in the day I remember people used to hook up an oil pump that would run for 30 seconds or so before you started the engine. From what I understand, 95% of engine wear comes during the first few seconds after start up before the oil pump can get oil back up in the top of the motor and it start to drain down like it should. The pre-oiler prevented this wear. Yeah...do not be too concerned with it. If it's something you think you need...you can rig up a Hobbs style switch...the idea here is that it will not give your ign power below X amount of oil pressure...So when you go to start it...you have to crank your engine over for a bit longer until pressure reaches a few pounds...the switch senses it, gives power to your ign and off you go...There are a few draw back to this (as I am sure you can imagine)...so a lot of guys who run this type of setup will put a bypass switch on it for easier start up...The idea is really more of a safety precaution for a running engine more than it is a pre-oiler...The idea being that if your oil pressure drops for whatever reason...it kills the engine. This is a popular option on big boats/yachts. It pressurizes the system before starting to make sure all the journals/galleys are full of oil before cranking. In a very expensive (read: marine!) gas or diesel engine it might be a worthwhile expense. Most boat engine don't change gears as in an automobile. They stay at a constant RPM and have a lot more load on the engine/bearings. You're right, they would be a good idea for such a thing. But...the reason you do not see a lot of them on 4x4 is the style of oil pan. It takes a serious very serious angle for the pickup to come out of the oil. Enough that a carburated engine will normally stop running....On many cars however...the oil will pull away with lot less force than you would think.
