All Things Motorcycle - Veskimo Personal Cooling System
Anyone have experience with the Veskimo Personal Cooling System? This product was recently reviewed in Motorcycle Consumer News (May 2011), and received the highest rating. It effectively keeps you cool in hot weather for several hours, but you are tethered to the bike by a tube that goes to a cooling bag containing ice. MCN said that the benefits outweigh the risk of being tethered to the bike by the tube. Opinions, anyone? It works very well. I filled the reservoir with 4 frozen liter-size water bottles and about a quart of water. When I connected it and turned it on, it began circulating the water through the vest. Temperature relief was immediate and dramatic. I did not need to run it continuously. I would run it when I got hot, then turn it off as soon as I cooled off. The bottles of water melted as time passed. I could have taken 4 more frozen bottles and run it longer. It can run on 8 regular AA alkaline batteries or 10 rechargeable NiMH batteries. I recently used the Veskimo 9 qt. system on my trip from Miami to Columbia South Carolina and back. I ran the system with my accessory power socket. The weather was very hot (94-94) and humid, and there was quite a bit of smoke due to brush fires from Daytona Beach through Savannah GA. I was very pleased with the performance of the Veskimo system, as I was able to keep cool and hydrated even with full gear on. My experience with store-bought ice was that it was good for only 2-3 hours, running the unit continuously.
