'Session' on KU admission row put off due to lack of quorum

Speaking to reporters after the adjournment of the meeting, Al-Khorafi attributed the lack of quorum to the failure of legislators, who asked for the session, to coordinate with the President and the government. He noted those who failed to assess the situation before signing the request to hold the session should be held responsible for lack of quorum. He said it is illogical for some to complain that the meeting started early at 9:00, because there were four bills on the agenda. Al-Khorafi affirmed the Secretariat of the National Assembly has taken all the necessary legal measures to hold the emergency session and the problem lies in the absence of some of the 33 MPs who signed the petition, such as Dr Salwa Al-Jassar, Mubarak Al-Khurainej and Mikhled Al-Azmi. Al-Khurainej is on official assignment in Cairo to attend the Arab Parliament meeting on the events in Syria. On the other hand, Al-Mulaifi admitted the admissions problem is not new as it started three years ago and got worse when the number of secondary school graduates increased in academic year 2011/2012. He pointed out there was a remarkable increase in the number of students after the implementation of the unified secondary education system in school year 2008/2009, while the admission percentage at the university did not change. Disclosing that he asked the University Council to present its recommendations to solve the problem, Al-Mulaifi stressed the need to prioritize the government universities project, considering it has been endorsed by the Educational Affairs Committee at the Parliament. He said other measures include the establishment of specialized universities, increasing the capacity of Kuwait University and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET), improving the scholarship and admission policies, and construction of the University City in Al-Shadadiya. He added some of the proposed projects necessitate the enactment of certain laws. “We know the lawmakers have been cooperative in this regard. The problem will be solved and the students will be able to pursue their chosen fields of specialization in the future but this requires united efforts and good intentions,” he explained. On taking political steps to address the problems of the educational sector, Al-Mulaifi asserted, “I will not accept any political solution even if it leads to my resignation. We should not politicize educational issues because it weakens the educational process.

Kuwait Medical Society, UK/Ireland: Towards a North American ...

If you've been reading the news regarding Higher education in Kuwait lately you've probably read numerous accounts of people not being accepted into the Medicine course following their pre-med years. The problem is mainly that they accept more people into the pre-med phase than the medical school can accommodate. They do so in hopes that the people who do not get the grades will switch to other majors. This does not become a problem until everyone gets good grades and thus the bar has to be raised. So, for example it's no longer a 2.5 cumulative GPA at that was set at the start of pre-med, now the bar has been raised to 3.0 or 3.2 GPA. Which is horrible, because it's like moving the goal post after someone has kicked the ball, totally unfair. There is also the issue of Gender bias where males need a lower GPA than females to enter the Medicine program. This is completely sexist and stems from the fact that many people think that "they'll get their degrees and hang them at home". The American University of the Middle East, in collaboration with the University of Calgary is going to open a Medical School complete with a University Hospital. If this goes through I hope the experience is a positive one much like the Cornell experience in Qatar. I really hope that its presence brings a North American Model of Medical Education to Kuwait, rather than the British one that we currently have. I also hope that the University Hospital starts offering residency programs that satisfy the standards of the Royal College of physicians and surgeons of Canada. I know there's a lot of wishful thinking on my part but if such an experience was possible in our neighboring country Qatar then surely it can be replicated here. We simply need the facilities and human resources to do so.
