About 8,000 people, ranging in age and athletic ability, participated in the Games’ summer events, which provide a platform for Arizona’s many amateur athletes.
DodgeballAbout six years ago, Serge Ferrari started playing in dodgeball tournaments at a bar in San Diego.
He decided to team up with the top players to form a group called “Rise of Brutality” and has gone on to win two dodgeball world championships.
“It’s funny how I started playing dodgeball, but I love how competitive it is,” Ferrari said.
Dodgeball always has been considered a game played by children or at charity events.
However, the teams competing in the dodgeball tournament took it serious.
“Everyone uses this tournament to get ready for the world championships in Las Vegas,” Ferrari said.

Arm wrestlingLeander Real Bird of Gilbert is a relative newcomer to the sport of arm wrestling; he pulled for the first time in November.
“I was at the rodeo, and I just happened to be walking by the tent,” Real Bird said. “Eric (Wolfe, event commissioner) invited me up to try it out, and I did and I liked it, and I’ve been working out at his house ever since.”
Real Bird has competed in four tournaments since then and has reached the semifinals a couple times. When he’s not arm wrestling at tournaments, Real Bird is a crew boss, running federal fire crews for the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
“I’m lucky to be here,” Real Bird said. “They’re trying to send me up to the big fire today. I’m on call.”

RacquetballFor many, sports are a family affair. That is certainly the case for the Swinneys of Mesa. Ray, Arlene and their son Neal all competed; daughter Halle had to sit this one out because there was no one else her age to play, a common problem for her.
“She loves to play,” Ray said. “There just aren’t any other kids.”
Ray has played on and off since college and started playing competitively about nine years ago. He got his wife into racquetball and then their kids. Neal was a golfer first, but with his parents playing so much he also picked up racquetball.
The Swinneys, whose license plate reads “RBFAMILY,” sometimes even play together.
“(Ray) and I will play mixed, and Neal has occasionally played with me in a few tournaments,” Arlene said.
