Test borings begin for repair of Delaware Aqueduct

NEWBURGH – Geotechnical test borings have begun in the Town of Newburgh for construction of an access shaft that will eventually result in construction of a new tunnel for the Delaware Aqueduct under the Hudson River. Test borings will begin soon on the Dutchess Side of the Hudson in Wappinger.

The new tunnel, when built is part of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s "Water for the Future” program, and will be aimed at alleviating leaking in the Roseton section of the Town of Newburgh.

Town Supervisor Wayne Booth is encouraged with the start of work.

“We have been working with the DEP for quite some time dealing with the repairs of the leaks in the Roseton area, so this looks like New York City is headed toward a permanent solution to their problem,” he said.

The DEP is also going to repair other leaks in Wawarsing from inside the existing tunnel.

The 2½ mile bypass tunnel around Roseton will break ground in 2013 and complete the connection to the Delaware Aqueduct in 2019. The total cost of both projects is some $2.1 billion.
