Prison ordered in church burglary
A 52-year-old woman has been sentenced to four years in prison for stealing a laptop computer last spring from a Naperville area church.
Wendy S. Johnson, of south suburban Dixmoor, will be placed on two years of mandatory supervised release following her parole from prison, according to records on file in DuPage County Circuit Court.
Judge George J. Bakalis convicted Johnson of a felony charge of burglary to a school, day care center or place of worship in the crime at World Mission Society Church of God. The church is located at 29W771 79th St., in the unincorporated Aero Estates area of DuPage County near far west-central Naperville.
Bakalis on Monday gave Johnson 73 days of credit toward her prison term for time she has spent in DuPage County Jail since being arrested, court records indicated. Bakalis also ordered her to make $630 restitution to the church and pay fines and court costs of $345, records showed.
Johnson was arrested in May following an investigation by DuPage County sheriff’s detectives.
She entered the church April 12 on the pretext of seeking financial assistance, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said in May. She then went into an office, where she emptied a bag and placed a Dell laptop computer and an electronic dictionary inside it before leaving.
Johnson was also convicted May 11 of a misdemeanor charge of attempted obstruction of justice, according to court records. A criminal complaint is outstanding against her in Will County, records indicated.
