Ben Mankiewicz warms to role as ASO host

Ben Mankiewicz is the weekend daytime host of Turner Classic Movies (TCM). When he made his TCM debut in September 2003, he became only the second host hired in the network's history.

Although Mankiewicz's grandfather, Herman Mankiewicz, and grand-uncle, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, were two of the iconic Hollywood movie-makers, he said only knew Hollywood at a distance.

Yes, his grandfather co-wrote "Citizen Kane," and his grand-uncle wrote and directed "All About Eve," he grew up the son of a Washington Lawyer.

"It was my father who grew up in L.A. and went to Hollywood High – before it had a ZIP code. Only years later after I grew up did I realize how important their movies are," Mankiewicz said.

A graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, he began his television career as a producer at WJLA, the ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C., before starting his on-air work as a news reporter and anchor at WCSC, the CBS affiliate in Charleston, SC.

From Charleston, Mankiewicz moved south to Miami in 1998 to become a reporter for Barry Diller's innovative start-up station, WAMI-TV. He was named Best TV News Anchor in South Florida by the weekly newspaper New Times.

Mankiewicz then moved to Los Angeles nearly 75 years after his grandfather, screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz arrived and wired his friend Ben Hecht back in New York, "Millions are to be grabbed out here, and your only competition is idiots. Don't let this get around."

As a film critic, Mankiewicz co-hosted the nationally syndicated television series "At the Movies" and currently co-hosts the on-line film review show "What the Flick?!" He also writes film reviews for The Huffington Post.

In a phone interview Mankiewicz talked about the film and the ASO performing together.

How was "Casablanca" chosen for this year's teaming with the ASO?

MANKIEWICZ: Well, they looking for a small movie that nobody had ever seen … No, actually the short answer is I don't know. But you want to do this with event movies – where the music is recognizable and where the music reaches people and touches them.

I did this last year with "The Wizard of Oz." So with "Casablanca," the music is instantly emotional for people. That is what makes it so amazing to have the rest of the dialogue in the movie play and then hear the orchestra live, it is really incredible.

He might not be hanging around that popular Hollywood zip code anymore, but Jason Priestley is staying busy in front of the camera, according to the latest from EW.com. In addition to starring in the DirecTV series, Call Me Fitz, and joining SyFy’s Haven, he’ll also be stirring up some trouble on USA’s Psych.

When he crosses paths with Shawn (James Roday) and Juliet (Maggie Lawson), Priestley will be portraying a motorcycle-riding con artist who has the misfortune to try and pull a fast one at the same spa resort that Shawn and Juliet are staying at for the weekend.

Guest-starring on the same episode will be Tony Hale (Arrested Development, Royal Pains) as the owner of an import/export business.

The quirky guy with the keen observation skills and his pals have all kinds of people stopping by during Season 6, so in addition to Priestley and Hale, you’ll also be able to see Danny Glover, Molly Ringwald, Joey McIntyre, Condoleeza Rice, and the master of the drawn-out sentence, William Shatner.

Psych returns for Season 6 on the USA Network this fall.
