15 arrested amid South Street disturbances | Philadelphia Inquirer | 2011-07-11
Fifteen people were arrested for minor offenses late Saturday and early Sunday around South Street, where a large crowd had congregated, police said.
Charges included disorderly conduct, underage purchase of liquor, resisting arrest, and obstructing traffic, said Officer Jillian Russell, a police spokeswoman. No violence or property damage was reported, she said.
Resident Regina Lee Blaszczyk reported people running up and down the street screaming, playing loud music from their cars, and honking their horns.
Police said Sunday that they did not know whether any of those arrested was linked to a Greek event that had wrapped up Saturday. In past years, large crowds of young people not associated with Greek organizations have gone to South Street on the last day of Philadelphia Greek Weekend, a gathering of African American fraternity and sorority members. Organizers of this year's event sought to keep it low-key.
