Sounds give summer life

An attorney once moved in across from our neighborhood swimming pool and promptly started complaining about the noise, causing lots of expensive and needless trouble before moving.

Good riddance. I enjoy the sounds of children shrieking and the buzzers launching the swim teams into action. They bring life to our neighborhood.

I would have welcomed such boisterous diversions in my steaming, isolated subdivision. The primary recreation was boredom - no summer day outings, whitewater rafting expeditions or Kundalini yoga camps.

I will forever be grateful to the Beatles for about the only sound of the summer that still sticks with me.

More years ago than I care to recall, my mother and I rode Trailways to visit her kin in southeastern Kansas. It was a long, slow slog, stopping at cafes in every little backwoods burg for questionable fare. The bus was permeated with more smoke than a bar in a Bogart movie, in this ancient era when smoking was regarded as a God-given right if not responsibility.

The trip was made only slightly more tolerable with a haunting, omnipresent tune coming from some mysterious source on that bus, as well as every radio speaker in every tiny town. "Strawberry Fields Forever" was released just before the group started taking way too many drugs.

We did take some traditional summer vacations, hauling a complicated and bewildering camping trailer to distant lands. It had a canvas top and platforms that pulled out to become beds. Such outings usually ended badly. The unstable supporting struts would suddenly let loose pitching the outermost sleeper to the opposite platform like a pancake on the griddle. Excursions with the trailer were few. It was quickly converted for trash hauling.

For the most part, we little suburban outcasts were left to fend for ourselves, which was not altogether a bad thing. Irrigation ditches were great diversions. We'd scour them for treasure such as the abandoned Hudson I once found used as a bank stabilizer. For us, it was as exciting as finding a long-buried mammoth. It certainly resembled an ice-age beast.

Cottonwood trees provided a cool refuge and a platform for our own high-rise tree-house developments. They were also strategic positions for dirt-clod assaults. We roamed the countryside on our bikes, ignoring admonitions by mothers who I now suspect were secretly thrilled that we would keep on pedaling. None of us got abducted as I recall. There might have been a spaceship incident, but no one will talk about it.
