Welch: It's all about losing things

People who never lose anything just don't know what they're missing.

What they're missing, of course, is the joy of finding what they've not lost.

Me, I'm a loser, and today has gone really well.

First I lost both my cellphones. Usually I lose just one and use the other one to ring it. The first time I tried that trick, I answered the missing phone the moment I got my hands on it. I couldn't figure out who was calling. I finally figured it out.

Today, having lost both phones, I was stymied. But I thought I knew where I'd left them — side by side in the basket in front of the handle on the shopping cart I had shoved five minutes before into a cart collection chute on the Walmart parking lot. Unfortunately, I was trapped in line at McDonald's when I missed the phones and realized where they likely were. When you're stuck in line at McDonald's, you're stuck in line at McDonald's.

When I'd finally paid for my breakfast burrito, I departed McDonald's posthaste to return to Walmart.

Alas. No shopping cart.

Did I mention that my main phone case also held my credit cards and driver's license? I do know how to lose things.

But the Walmart cart-collector guy allayed my concerns. He said he'd just found my phones and turned them in. I love him.

That's another thing people who never lose anything miss. They miss feeling great affection for that perfect stranger who finds what's lost and doesn't keep it.

Incidentally, most finders are honest — at least from my experience. I'm long on experience.

Once I lost a whole batch of credit cards on a city bus in Washington, D.C., of all places. The finder mailed them back to me anonymously along with a Bible passage. Nice. I don't remember now which passage it was — just that it wasn't the parable of the lost coin or the lost sheep. Those are my favorites.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch at day's end, my husband waited patiently for the cows to come home and noticed the red and white cow and her black and white calf were missing.

Off we went to look for them. They were in none of the right places. We theorized mother and calf might have gotten shut in the far pasture inadvertently during a recent roundup. When it comes to rounding up cows, inadvertent happens.

Soon I was following cow trails though our mesquite forest while my husband drove the fence line in his Ford V-8, yippee-i-o-ki-a, if you know the song. Except he drives a Chevrolet.

Tables & Carts & Chairs - Coin Laundry Forums - Planet Laundry

I have a 2000 sq ft building with 39 washer hookups and 23 dryers. (Yes I know the dry to washer is out of sinc but that is the way it came. So far so good. Besides I have 32 washers in the building currently). Any way I have 3 folding tables 30" by 72" with NO upper shelf. 1 - 30" by 48" with an upper shelf. 4 carts with a hanger bar and 2 regular carts. I have 16 adult chairs and a small picnic style table for children. Larry; Good point to tables/carts. It appears my ratio is not in line with current trends. On of the problems with buying an existing mat is you have the predetermined floor plan until you have enough income $ to make changes. Yours sounds like it is more up to date and useful. I will have to play with layouts (the Lego pieces on my free time ) to see how I can tweak things. Originally there were only 28 feet folding tables. The other 17 feet were for chairs and vending machines. Realizing that more folding space was needed, I removed the vending machines and chairs. The added folding tables can be easily removed to place more chairs. However, I later found that during busy days, these folding areas were either used or already occupied by customers' shopping carts. I left some lightweight folding chairs on the top of the washers in case some customers really need to sit down. I've wondered what I should have done differently. Installing a couple of less machines could be an easy fix. However, there have been equal demand for more folding space and seats as well as more machines during busy days. I think the current settings (including pricing) have come to a balance for my mat in my particular market. Once I raise my washers' prices next month, it will probably break the balance and I will need to re-arrange the space accordingly. I agree that laundry carts are never a good replacement for folding tables. There are only a few exceptions. Some people don't like to fold clothes with other people. They prefer to grab some laundry carts and stay away from the others. The problem they created was that they usually folded in front of dryers. And most of the time, their clothes stayed in the dryer pockets. Some people don't like to put clothes on the upper shelves. Those are too high for them. So when folding space is limited, they fold and place clothes on carts.
