Road to Rumi Darwaza's restoration work blocked

LUCKNOW: Sheer inaction on the part of district administration is preventing the restoration of the iconic Rumi Darwaza .

More than three weeks have passed and the deadline of June 1 fixed by the officials themselves to start repair of the monument not adhered to. When asked to comment on the progress made in this direction, district magistrate Anil Sagar said, "Status quo."

The reason for inaction according to the DM is lack of support from Maulana of Tileywali Masjid, Fazlur Rehman Waizi to repair the link road.

The link road, which starts from Kudiya Ghat entrance and ends on Hardinge Bridge, is the lifeline of the entire project. It would bear the load traffic diverted from Shah Meena Road and Chowk area once the existing route is closed to start repair of the monument. Heavy vehicles are already passing through this route but it is not fit for smaller vehicles. All thanks to its dilapidated condition. Till a mechanism to manage the traffic in the area is devised, restoration work cannot be undertaken.

State irrigation department was delegated the responsibility to repair the road. It started the work on May 23, but stopped within a few hours. "Under the Maulana's elder son Mannan, a group of youngsters attacked the labourers, damaged the equipment and office property," read a letter sent by Rakesh Kumar, executive engineer, irrigation department. Maulana Waizi, however, rubbishes the charges. "They are simply telling lies," he said. Kumar has now demanded police protection to go ahead with the work. "What if the locals beat labourers and our staff again? We wanted to lodge an FIR against the attackers and have identified their leader. But police did not register a case. It simply received a copy, which seems to have fallen on deaf ears," said a staff.

Maulana has his set of reasons for dissent. "Authorities were supposed to take steps to ensure that the Masjid is not damaged. But they have not," he told ToI. DM Sagar however said that work in this regard has already begun. "We have not breached the compromise document. It is only a matter of time," said the DM.
