Music Video Appreciation: “Toy Soldiers” by Martika « TV Junkies ...

Last night, was severely underwhelming), but I lucked into this video for “Toy Soldiers” by Martika this morning on VH1 Classic.  Released in 1989, the clip is a perfect combination of late 80′s technical prowess (ooh, black and white AND color!  Weird water overlay!  Terrible wigs!) and weird storyline.  I had never heard this song or seen the video for it, so it came as a complete surprise that I was so sucked in.  From what I can tell, the clip is about four friends, one of whom falls for a bad boy who buys drugs and then dies at the end.  It is so beautifully overwrought.  I kind of couldn’t take my eyes off it.  Enjoy!
