Houston ISD says it's ready to take over North Forest schools next year

While Houston Independent School District claims it has not advocated taking over the long beleaguered North Forest ISD -- which the state announced Tuesday it will shut down in 2012 -- Superintendent Terry Grier said HISD “will step up and deliver for these children,” with the support of the board president.

North Forest operates 11 elementary, middle and high schools in an area adjacent to the northeast corner of HISD.

Here is the statement issued late Tuesday by HISD:

Texas Education Commissioner Robert Scott has ordered closing the North Forest Independent School District and potentially merging it with the Houston Independent School District beginning in the 2012-2013 school year. The Houston Independent School District did not advocate for this proposal. However, if Commissioner Scott’s order becomes reality, HISD stands ready to welcome the children of North Forest and partner with that proud community.

HISD’s African American and Hispanic students have significantly narrowed the achievement gap, and graduation rates for those students are on the rise, said HISD Board President Paula Harris.

“We know it’s going to be a challenge. We believe there should be an effective teacher in every classroom and an effective leader in every school. We are realizing the positive results from those beliefs and we looking forward to sharing our academic achievement with every student, teacher, and community member joining Team HISD,” Harris said. “We look forward to working with Commissioner Scott to ensure that HISD receives adequate financial resources to tackle this unique challenge.”

HISD Superintendent Dr. Terry Grier said the nation’s seventh-largest school district would embrace North Forest’s children.

“We will step up and deliver for these children,” Dr. Grier said. “All children deserve a quality education, regardless of where they happen to live.”

The Houston Independent School District is the largest school district in Texas and the seventh-largest in the United States with 298 schools and more than 200,000 students. The area 301-square-mile is one of the largest employers in the Houston metropolitan area with nearly 30,000 employees.

2011 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards

On Friday, the rest of Texas will learn what students at George Washington Middle School in Laredo already know – that their principal, David Gonzalez, is one of the best in the state. Mr. Gonzalez has been selected as a statewide finalist for a 2011 H-E-B Excellence in Education Award.

He will be surprised with the news that he is a finalist during a Friday morning student assembly. An entourage of 10-12 H-E-B employees, carrying gifts of balloons, flowers, and cake will make a surprise appearance and present Mr. Gonzalez with a $1,000 check for himself and  $2,500 for his school. He will also be invited to compete on a statewide level in the next stage of the competition in Austin in May 2011.

Mr. Gonzalez is only one of four principals competing in the awards’ outstanding Secondary Principal category. Should he win, he’ll bring home a cash prize of $10,000 for himself and a second $10,000 for his school.

H-E-B is surprising a total of 40 finalists across the state and awarding $95,000 to principals and teachers. The H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards is celebrating its 10th anniversary of recognizing and rewarding outstanding Texas educators. The awards are now the largest monetary rewards program for educators in Texas, and one of the largest in the nation.
