Despite having a partially paralyzed right arm from birth, Flynn, who’d been a caddy at the old United Shoe Country Club (now Beverly Golf & Tennis) when he was 10 years old, made his mark as a competitor and winner. He captured the 1959 Vermont Open (shooting rounds of 64 and 67) and then, in 1973, he became the first, and only, lefthander to win the Massachusetts Open. That one had to feel especially good because the tourney was held at Kernwood CC, just a 10 minute ride from his home. “Billy could’ve been an outstanding player (for a longer period), but there wasn’t that much money in it at the time,” said Green. “But he was excellent. I never saw him hit a ball that didn’t go straight. He had a simple swing and was a smart player. He was one of the few people who could compete — compete hard — and still be a gentleman about it.” Added Lyons, “People forget what a magnificent player Flynn was because his most solid years were (his younger days), but he played really well even as he got older. And he was a great teacher. Even with his busy schedule, he taught every Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for anyone that was interested. He also was the first guy to ever give indoor golf lessons. He’d do a group lesson for 400 women at Thomson. He was just heavily involved in the game at all times.” “Well, in essence, Bill became involved with virtually every aspect of golf,” said Larrabee. “He did it as a professional player, a golf course owner and developer and was a strong supporter of public golf and junior golf. He also did it on the administrative side as president of the New England PGA and he was a teacher as well. He also played in the U.S. Open and the PGA Championships, which are two of the so-called majors in golf. He also got involved with the MGA and his expertise saved a couple of golf courses from possible extincton. He really did it do it all.” “Bill was always very humble and unassuming,” said Larrabee. “He knew how to have a great life and he was business oriented, but he would get youngsters off the streets and his pros at the course were instructed to teach kids the game. He never wanted to call attention to himself, but he was the quintessential golf professional and the role model for every golf pro on the North Shore.
