Dittmar Gallery displays artwork inspired by everyday objects

Buttons, candy wrappers, paper clips and small toys hide beneath patches of blue, green, yellow and pink fabric woven together with pieces of polka-dot and striped cotton.

The 50-by-50-inch collage titled "Sweet Life" hangs on a pale white gallery wall opposite a piece of thin, transparent fabric threaded with rainbow-colored strings suspended from the ceiling and illuminated by a light overhead.   

The two works are part of Chicago native Pat focuses on creating intricate collages using various "wet" techniques such as painting or dying fabrics to accompany her quilt work.

"I start with tiny fiber fragments made of fabric that are either found, given to me or recycled from other projects or people, and I create a collage of fabric layered with found objects or other paper items," she said. I am seeing a sea of red and white polka dots on Navy blue fabric right now. A few months ago I picked up around 9 yards of red and white polka dot fabric for $4. I was thrilled at the buy especially because we were moving the next week out on 60 acers so its not like I can just go fabric shopping any time I want to. So any way I have been able to make the 1930's scalloped collar and blouse, Vogue 2903 , and a 1950's dress tutorial from Casey's Elegant Musings . I am about ready to never see, wear, or sew polka dots for the rest of my life. I am almost done with the 1950's dress, and I love how it turned out! just the way I wanted it to and believe me when I draft my own patterns it is rare I walk away from the finished product going ohh ahh.
