Edward Warde of Little Wrathinge

EDWARD WARDE of Little Wrathinge [Wratting], Suffolk, yeoman, 9 January 1620, proved at Ipswich 7 March 1620. To my wife Judeth my house, orchard and garden, with the shepps of bees therein, during her natural life, so as she shall leave one upper chamber, furnished for mine executor, who soever he be, viz. one bed and all things thereunto belonging, called Joseph’s chamber. To my son Nathaniel Warde forty pounds and my best riding cloak. To my son Leonard (?) fifty pounds and my best cloak, when his apprenticeship shall come forth. To Lydia, my daughter, thirty pounds. To Mary, my daughter, twenty pounds. To Rebecca Warde, my daughter, forty pounds. To Susan, my daughter, ten pounds. Son Thomas Ward to be sole executor. To son Edward Ward after his time shall come forth &c.

I have, so far, not found anything more about Thomas Ward and this will is the only mention of him. He was most likely the oldest son and born about 1595, plus or minus a few years, since he was made sole executor of his father’s will. He is not mentioned in any of the wills I’ve found of his siblings. All of the other children appear to be under age at the time of this will.

As Waters mentions in his note, “Leonard” may be a mistake in transcription for the son “Edward”. On the other hand, Leonard may have been another individual who died early. Edward mentions each of his children once, so it’s unlikely that he was repeating himself in mentioning Leonard and then, later, mentioning Edward.

There are two Nathaniel Wards, first cousins, both of whom came to New England in the late 1630s, so we must be careful not to confuse one with the other. Rev. Nathaniel Ward, son of John, lived in Ipswich, Massachusetts from 1634 until his return to England in 1647, where he died in 1652. This Nathaniel Ward, son of Edward, lived for a short time at Newtown (later Cambridge), moved to Hartford, Connecticut then to Hadley, Massachusetts. He married Jane, the widow of John Hopkins of Hartford. They had no children. Nathaniel was admitted Freeman at Hadley, Massachusetts on March 26, 1661.

Some events of Nathaniel’s life in Hartford, Connecticut:

At the Massachusetts General Court, meeting at Newtown, on March 3, 1635/6, formed a “Commission of Massachusetts” as a temporary government for Connecticut for one year. John Winthrop, Jr. was appointed Governor and two men from each plantation were chosen as representatives; Pynchon and Smyth of Springfield; Ludlow and Phelps of Windsor; Steele and Westwood of Hartford, and Swaine and Ward of Wethersfield. “Their first court was held in Newtown, April  26, 1636. Seven sessions were convened during the year.  The last was February 21, 1636/7… During the year, Ludlow, Phelps, Steele and Westwood were present at every court.
