Avenue Broadband will change its name on Aug. 1
Earlier this year, Sikeston, Mo.-based NewWave Communications purchased Avenue Broadband, a cable, Internet and telephone provider that serves portions of the Tri-State.
The deal closed in April, but the transition from Avenue to NewWave won't be finalized until Aug. 1.
In the Tri-State, the shift affects Avenue customers in the following communities:
SOUTHEASTERN ILLINOIS: Bridgeport, Lawrenceville, St. Francisville, Sumner and portions of Lawrence County
SOUTHWESTERN INDIANA: Bicknell, Bruceville, Dale, Edwardsport, Elberfeld, Ferdinand, Freelandville, Haysville, Ireland, part of Jasper, Loogootee, Mariah Hill, Monroe City, Oakland City, Petersburg, St. Meinrad, Santa Claus, Shoals, Vincennes, Washington, Wheatland, Winslow and portions of Dubois, Gibson, Knox, Martin, Pike, Spencer and Warrick counties
The transition to NewWave is expected to improve service quality with more HD channels, faster Internet access and better phone service.
While it is adding Avenue's 54,000 customers in Illinois and Indiana, NewWave's pending sale of systems in Kentucky and Tennessee to Time Warner Cable means that others in our area will no longer be served by the company by the end of this year. In the Tri-State, that affects customers in Hopkins and Ohio counties (including the cities of Madisonville, Hartford and Beaver Dam) in Western Kentucky.
The transition to NewWave may also settle the question of where some Avenue customers will get Fox programming. NewWave carries the new Fox44 in its Tri-State service areas, while Avenue currently carries it only in its larger territories.
WIN, HAMILTON COUNTY COMMUNICATIONS CUSTOMERS MAY SEE RETURN OF FOX SOON
When Local 7 WTVW lost its Fox affiliation recently, cable and digital video customers of Wabash Independent Networks (WIN) and Hamilton County Communications in Southeastern Illinois lost their only source of the network's popular programming.
WEVV, which picked up Fox programming, is the only Evansville station not available on the WIN or Hamilton County systems, which left many customers wondering what would happen.
Now we know: WIN, which provides programming for both companies, has been negotiating with St. Louis Fox affiliate KTVI-Fox 2 for the rights to carry that station's signal. A decision should come soon.
WTVW NOW AIRING 22 HOURS OF CLASSIC TV EACH WEEK
With the exception of Local 7 WTVW's daily edition of "The Andy Griffith Show," classic TV programming has been missing from Tri-State television since NEWS 25 dropped its RTV affiliation last August. If the comments from my readers since that time are any indication, that sort of programming has been missed.
