College students should not overlook coupons, deals

Chances are, this is not a question that your friend would normally text you, in fact, the phrase  "clipping coupons" may immediately take your mind to a nursing home filled with grandmothers. Recently though, I have realized it's not just a white-haired, elderly affair. In fact, college students might find coupons more valuable than any other population as many of us are financially crunched.

  Just as we've moved on from vinyls to mp3s, the coupon world has evolved, too. The classic medium for these money-saving rectangles is no longer just the Sunday newspaper. Sure, you can find plenty of great coupons there, but there is a whole new universe of bargains now.

There are numerous websites that are worth checking on a regular basis for wonderful deals including, but not limited to:  thekrazycouponlady.com,southernsavers.com and thefrugalgirls.com. Then of course, if you are looking for a specific product, you can always Google it and, more often than not, find some sort of sale. Not only that, but check the back of receipts from Kroger—there are goodies there, too! Also, rewards cards are all the rage now. Many stores offer free memberships that offer plenty of coupons or special codes (AC Moore, Borders, Speedway, Panera Bread, Office Depot, etc).  

Finally, the coupon industry is going green! There are many establishments that will give you a discount when you simply show your coupon on your smart phone. No cutting or paper necessary! 

Of course, just like any hobby, you can improve your skills beyond the basic level. This may seem silly in terms of coupons, after all, it isn't exactly like practicing a golf swing, but it can actually be an art. Buying ahead is a skill that can prove to be incredibly useful. Buying two items for the price of one even if both aren't needed at that time is one way to save money. Another tip is to organize. Buy a cheap organizer for a dollar or two and keep it handy. 

The only thing better than a great discount is a freebie, and these are in, too! "Hey, It's Free" features at least one free item each day on their twitter page (twitter.com/heyitsfree). Granted, some of these samples are small, but sometimes it is nice to get to test a product before buying it. Don't forget your Marshall ID for freebies or discounts, either. For example, with your ID and a purchase of at least $5, you get a free piece of pie from Jim's Steak and Spaghetti.
