The Trouble with Birthday Cakes
I will admit that I have undertaken much greater feats than pulling off our most recent affair, but this was no small order that our 4-going-on-13-year-old daughter requested. I tried to keep it light, but where I seem to fail every year is my inability to just admit that I cannot bake cakes. You see, each year growing up, my dad would bake my birthday cake, and it is something I have always cherished. I thought it would be nice to carry on the tradition of creating a memorable treat. For Eliana’s first birthday, I envisioned a frilly, flowery, princess cake covered in pink icing and flowers. My first mistake? Baking the cakes that morning. Because the cakes didn’t have time to cool before I iced them, the icing started melting everywhere. Luckily, my dad arrived early and swooped in to save the day. Needless to say, despite my dad’s handy work, Eliana’s first birthday cake looked less than savory. Birthday number two came along, and Elmo took center stage in Eliana’s life. That was the same year that I temporarily threw in the towel. Santoni’s not only made a delicious cake, but a beautifully decorated one too. It was easier, yes, but I felt a pang of guilt not having made the cake myself. I doubt Eliana cared much—she was more focused on the fact that it was cake, that it tasted really yummy, and that Elmo’s face covered the majority of it. Year three neared, and despite having just given birth weeks earlier, I decided that I was going to return to my former glory of making everything from scratch, even the cake. I’m sure many of you have seen the giant cupcake cake pans; they are beyond adorable. So, Eliana and I traipsed off to the store, baby in tow, where she chose to have one layer of strawberry cake and one layer of chocolate cake—very sophisticated, I know! I had faith in myself. I could do this. To say the least it wasn’t easy, but I did it. As we sang “Happy Birthday,” Eliana stood by her cake with a princess tiara crowning her head and a pink feather boa strewn around her neck, beaming from ear to ear because she knew they were singing for her. As I cut into the cake to serve our birthday princess the first piece of cake, the remainder of the cake started to topple. As the cake fell, the all-too-familiar feeling of failure swept over me once more. I just wanted to bake a cake that looked nice and tasted great. Why could I not get that second component? Why couldn’t I make cakes with ease?Elmo Cake Pan - News
